The pros and cons of open source software

According to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, "source code" is the set of instructions that tells software how to work. "Open source software" uses "source code" that can be modified and redistributed for free. Open source has been around for decades but, until recently, the federal government was hesitant to adopt it.

Now, nearly every federal agency uses open source -- some agencies more than others.

Stephen Warren, CIO at the Department of Veterans Affairs, discussed the pros and cons of open source software with Government Matters.
