Coca-Cola responds to ad criticism with longer version

(WJLA) - It’s not the splash Coca-Cola is typically known for, but the Super Bowl ad featuring ‘America the Beautiful’ sung in seven languages enraged some viewers, who communicated their displeasure via social media:

WTF? @CocaCola has America the Beautiful being sung in different languages in a #SuperBowl commercial? We speak ENGLISH here, IDIOTS.

Not a fan of the CocaCola commercial. America The Beautiful should not be sang in any other language other than English. Sorry not sorry.

”I get the whole 'America' thing, but it's just a little bit dramatic,” says Falls Church resident Dutch Martin. “I think people are looking for controversy to be honest, and looking for things to talk about.”

But it appears as though it’s the kind of controversy that is costing the soda company customers.

“After that Coca-Cola commercial, that's why we drink Dr. Pepper – what a shame,” says Alex Samuel of Arlington.

So did Coke pull the ad? Hardly. The soft drink company is now planning an even longer, 90-second version during Friday night’s Olympic opening ceremonies.

One woman from Arlington didn’t necessarily dislike the commercial, but isn’t sure the company needs to go this far to prove its point:

“I mean, I think that's kind of being a baby on their side – they should kind of just drop it and I mean I would take it down… Honestly, I wouldn't [not] play it anymore, but I wouldn't air a longer version," says Christine McNamara.

And while some say the ad fails to sum up America, others say there is no need to apologize:

"I actually think that's kinda cool, usually companies get kind of apologetic in those cases, but I think it's cool that they're standing by what they did, so it's refreshing,” says Mike Englert.
