(CNN) - George Zimmerman is opening up about the night he killed Trayvon Martin.

Seven months after he was acquitted of second-degree murder and manslaughter in Martin's death, Zimmerman sat down to talk with CNN's Chris Cuomo about the case. Zimmerman maintains that he acted in self-defense within the law when he shot the Florida teenager during a confrontation.

Zimmerman, who was a neighborhood watchman at the time, says he does regret going out that night. He says he apologized to Martin's family during a 2012 bond hearing and would like to apologize again.

At the time, attorneys for Martin's family called the courtroom apology a self-serving act by a man facing a life prison sentence.
