About 50 percent of flights in the Washington area had been canceled as of Wednesday evening. Some 3,600 flights were canceled nationwide Wednesday and 20 percent of the flights in the northeast are expected to be canceled Thursday.

Baltimore and all area airports suffered major delays Wednesday because of cancellations in Atlanta and other southern airports.

Beginning Wednesday night BWI plans to have 75 different types of equipment on its runways in hopes of keeping them open for all types of planes.

The airport plans an all-out assault that will begin with pre-treating some of the 22 million square feet of pavement.

“It’s a monumental task,” says Wayne Pennell, BWI chief operating officer. “When you think about the runway it’s two miles long, 200 feet wide, and we are moving it all at once so air traffic can come in and land.”
