Winter weather pummels D.C. area
WASHINGTON (AP) - The nation's capital and surrounding areas are shut down as snow blankets the region.
The National Weather Service received reports Thursday morning of nearly 9 inches in Washington, more than 26 inches in Baltimore County and 14 inches in northern Delaware.
Snow mixed with sleet in some areas through the morning and a second snow band is expected to pass through the region in the evening. Forecasters said the region might see its highest snowfall amounts since February 2010.
Crews worked through the night to clear snow from roads and schools and government offices throughout the region are closed.
Maryland and Virginia have declared states of emergency and Delaware has issued a limited state of emergency. D.C. officials say vehicles parked on emergency routes will be towed.
