Police: Suspect in PG Co. officer-involved shooting reached for gun
(WJLA) - Prince George's County police have charged one suspect in connection with an officer-involved shooting that took place early Wednesday morning.
The suspect is currently in the hospital being treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
According to police, the preliminary investigation of the incident indicates that, around 12:45 a.m. in the 6700 block of Green Haven Road, an off-duty police officer saw what appeared to be a "suspicious" parked car with two people inside.
The officer, whom police say was driving a marked car and was dressed in full uniform, said he approached the car to investigate.
The officer reported that, when he ordered one of the suspects out of the car, a gun fell out of the car and onto the ground.
At that point, the officer said he ordered the suspect to raise his hands. The suspect reportedly did not comply with the orders, and made a move that appeared to the officer like he was reaching for the gun.
"Fearing for his life, the officer discharged his service weapon, striking the suspect," police said in a statement. "His injuries are not considered life-threatening."
A subsequent investigation revealed the gun was stolen, from Virginia.
The officer was not injured.
Police said the suspect, identified as 21-year-old Ricky Lamounte Reid, Jr., who lived close by, is in police custody at a nearby hospital. Handgun and theft charges against him are pending.
A statement from the Prince George's County Police Department said the officer involved has been with the Prince George's County Police Department for more than three years. He is on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
