Unique treats for spring in D.C.

(WJLA) - For 22 years running, spring has started a little icy here at Rita’s on H Street.

It’s the first day of their spring free ice giveaway, and according to owner Ron Sealy, “it sets everybody’s mind up that warm weather is coming.”

“We do between 1,500 and 2,000 cups of free ice,” says Sealy.

That’s three to five times the amount in a normal day.

Mango is the number one flavor, and Yanna – who works in Chinatown – says: “I let them know if they didn’t have mango there was going to be a riot.

Meanwhile in Georgetown at Peacock Café, Chef and co-owner Maziar Farivar is ringing in the New Year:

“Iranians celebrate it, it’s a few thousand-years-old tradition of Nowruz – which translates to ‘new day’ – the rebirth of Mother Earth when everything starts to blossom to come back to new life.”

The celebration lasts 13 days, and if you have a culinary curiosity, Peacock will feature a Nowruz menu.

“Fresh herb rice with some fish is very traditional – fabulously delicious and very representative of our Nowruz celebration,” says Farivar.

You’re also getting a first look at the City Center neighborhood taking down the barricades and lighting up their plaza and park for the first time in honor of spring and cherry blossom season.
