A wake-up call for satellite communications

Last year, IOActive -- a Seattle-based security services firm -- studied widely-used SATCOM technologies made by Harris, Hughes, Cobham, Thuraya, JRC, and Iridium.

The study uncovered gaping holes in security that can be exploited by hackers.

IOActive notified the companies but, to date, Iridium is the only one that has addressed the problem.

Ruben Santamarta, principal security consultant for IOActive, discussed his research with Government Matters.
