Bodies found near I-295 in District identified

The bodies of two men who were were found Wednesday near the Interstate 295 ramp in Washington, D.C. have been identified by authorities.

The body of 57-year-old Robert Shafley of Northeast, Washington, DC.was discovered at 11:16 a.m. on the 2300 block of Pennsylvania Avenue southeast.

About 50 feet away,  police discovered the body of  61-year-old Andrew Thomas.  Police said Thomas had no fixed address.

Autopsies  were performed on both bodies, but the cause and manner of deaths are still pending. 

There were no signs of trauma or foul play, but officers believe the men were homeless and that the sudden cold temperatures played a role in their deaths.

The suspected cause of the deaths appear to be hypothermia, but  the final determination will be made by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of the District of Columbia.  These investigations are continuing.
