Memory of Casey Schulman celebrated with Falls Church "Shine On" week
FALLS CHURCH, Va. (WJLA) - A Falls Church family has turned the pain of the sudden loss of family member into something positive.
Margo Schulman and her family started, “Shine On” Week at Jeb Stuart High School in Falls Church, the alma mater of Casey Schulman who died two years ago at the age of 22.
Casey Schulman was a student at the University of Virginia when she died in a boating accident during a snorkeling trip that was part of her semester at sea in the Caribbean in 2012.
This is the first year for the event at Jeb Stuart , but judging by its reception, it may be back for at least a second year.
“We were super close in a wonderful way,” Margo Schulman said. “So I have that. I will always have that.”
"Shine On" Week is a week of encouragement and good will for all, the family said.
“I’ll tell (you) 'Shine On' Week is just like living with Casey. It's just what I wanted it to be. It's happy, it's fun, it's meaningful,” Margo Schulman said.
It is also an opportunity for students to nominate candidates for a $20,000 college scholarship.
The scholarship and the week is a way of giving back to the late Casey Schulman, students said.
It’s also a reminder to all to stop and appericate life and share the passion Casey Schulman had for life, staff members said.
