Leopoldo A. Cabrales, 65, of South Riding, was charged Friday with assault and battery, a misdemeanor, for an assault that took place on March 27.

Cabrales allegedly assaulted a 12-year-old student while in class at Sterling Middle School. Authorities said the student received minor injuries.

The case was initially handled by Loudoun County Child Protective Services before the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division was notified.

Students at Sterling Middle School reportedly know Cabrales as a patient man. But for weeks, sixth grader Eduardo Quinteros had heard a rumor about the teacher’s aide.

"My friends said he kicked a student who talked too much," he said.

We reached Cabrales at his home, but he declined to comment. Meanwhile, back at school, kids were buzzing about the arrest.

Cabrales was released a $5,000 unsecured bond.
