Penalty fees for overdue ICC tolls upset customer

OLNEY, Md. (WJLA) - Catherine Wallenmeyer prides herself on punctuality – which is why she cringes at this stack of bills. Each piece of paper is a $50 penalty for not paying tolls on the Intercounty Connector (ICC) on time.

The problem is, this mother of three claims that Maryland never even mailed her the original bills.

"If there's a bill out there, or a toll that's out there, we're responsible enough to pay it. But you have to be able to get it to us, for us to know it exists," she says.

Last week, the Wallenmeyers paid $316 for six late tolls, but then yesterday, the family of five learned it owes yet another $316. That’s $632 total – enough for a monthly car payment!

Her husband Tim sweats just thinking about it:

"We really don't have an extra $600 to be paying tolls."

The Maryland Transportation Authority, which oversees the ICC, told ABC7 a customer who travels through a toll booth without paying has an obligation to watch their mail or contact EZ-Pass to pay the due toll. But it also says that they are sympathetic to customers’ concerns, and will handle them on a case-by-case basis.
