University of Maryland calls for safety changes around dangerous College Park intersection
The University of Maryland is asking the Maryland State Highway Administration to implement safety changes around College Park that would help protect students and pedestrians in the area.
In an open letter to the community, UMD President Wallace Loh asks the state agency to adjust the lighting, signage and speed limits on U.S. Route 1 near Knox Road, according to WTOP. The letter also asks drunk pedestrians, walkers on cell phones and drivers to pay closer attention.
At least two people were killed near that intersection in the past 10 months, WTOP reports. The university also says campus police and Prince George's County police will help enforce traffic laws on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights to look out for jaywalkers.
