Andre Brown, High Point High School teacher and coach, charged with sex abuse of a minor
BELTSVILLE, Md. (AP/WJLA) - A high school teacher in Prince George's County has admitted to sexually abusing a 17-year-old student last fall.
Police have charged 32-year-old Andre Brown with sex abuse of a minor after a student at High Point High School, where Brown was a teacher and coach, told police that he abused her on school grounds.
Brown, who lives on Silver Park Drive in Suitland, Md., was arrested Thursday and is currently being held by the department of corrections.
Meanwhile, students were back in class Friday at High Point for the first time since Brown's arrest.
"A lot of people are talking about it around school," one student told ABC7.
A Prince George's County police officer greeted students Friday morning as they got off the school buses and went to class. Many students appeared to be shocked about the news of their longtime teacher and coach.
"He was very friendly, around school," said student Mariiyam Sali.
On top of being a social studies teacher, 32-year-old Andre Brown was the football coach for the varsity team for the past two seasons.
"He's a real good coach. He pushes you and everything," said player Sam Reynolds.
Friday, Brown is in jail, charged with sexually abusing a student. One mother decided to drive her daughter and friend to school today.
"I'm going to the school now to try to find out what happened," Aminata Cici told ABC7.
Police said the incident occurred last fall with a 17-year-old girl, allegedly on school grounds. The teen went to authorities recently, and Brown was arrested at his Suitland home Thursday.
Student Maimouna Camara described Brown as a "hands-on" teacher and coach.
"He hugs students, and stuff like that," she said.
The alleged predator admitted to the crime. Now, detectives are reaching out to the community to see if there are perhaps more victims. The young accuser tells police it was one incident of abuse, last year.
