Crowded lot at Bethesda park prompts ticketing

BETHESDA, Md. (WJLA) - There’s irony in the fact that Norwood Park’s peace ultimately attracts a lot of stress – in this case, in the form of illegal parking – and lots of it.

"It's not uncommon to see cars parking in the grass, cars double-parking all over the place -- it's just a very busy venue for families and kids and sports and recreational activities," says park patron Brian Kennedy.

Norwood Local Park is home to a playground, two baseball fields, a basketball court, recreational building, and picnic area, as well as five tennis courts.

In other words, there are very few parking spots for a myriad of activities

"He took a class at the school, it was a music class now that I think about it, and we missed it a few times because we couldn't park," says parent Pam Bailey.

Certain residents (none of whom wanted to speak on-camera) have asked Park Police to block access to anyone outside Chevy Chase or Bethesda. And while geographic profiling is illegal, officers have stepped up patrols by ticketing drivers who park on the grass.

"It's great that everyone from Montgomery County, Maryland, D.C., Virginia -- so many people come here to enjoy it. Let's enjoy the space," says patron Edie Purdie.

For now, park planners are considering adding more pavement to this plot of green.
