(WJLA) - Undocumented immigrants living in Washington, D.C. can officially receive a driver's license starting today.

The new limited license is available to all undocumented immigrants who have lived in the city for at least six months, according to WAMU. Undocumented immigrants will not be able to use the license to board a plane or enter a federal building, but they can use it to legally drive a car.

The licenses are a result of a bill passed last year by the D.C. Council and signed by Mayor Vincent Gray to provide residents living in the country illegally with an ID card.

City officials are estimating between 16,000 and 19,000 residents will sign up for a license, WAMU reports.
