Man crashes car into ABC affiliate in Baltimore
TOWSON, Md. (AP/WJLA) - A man claiming to be God rammed a truck through the front of a Baltimore-area television station Tuesday, leaving a gaping hole in the front of the building as reporters and other staff fled the chaotic scene.
The 29-year-old suspect drove the stolen truck into the lobby after a security guard reportedly refused to let him in.
During a press conference late Tuesday afternoon, Baltimore County Police confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody. Officers also reported no injuries, and that the suspect "clearly suffers from emotional and mental health issues."
The incident took place just before noon, and weapons were reportedly found inside the suspect's vehicle nearby.
Just prior to the truck crashing through, the station’s security guard yelled at employees to evacuate the building. News anchor Jamie Costello ran for the back door.
The suspect ran to the second floor of the station as tactical officers from the Baltimore County Police swarmed the facility as the man barricaded himself inside.
As the standoff stretched into the late afternoon, employees were grateful that the security guard acted so swiftly.
On Tuesday night, more than eight hours after it crashed into the WMAR building, the dump truck was finally towed out. And WMAR is covering its own damaged building, live.
The station’s IT specialist Nic Hall was in the basement when the incident happened. He didn’t hear anything, and was the only person who didn't evacuate – instead staying on the phone with police.
"I was just trying to tell them where I was and help them get around the building...it's not easy," he explained.
WMAR officials say their security team did its job, especially considering that this was something they never dreamed could happen:
"When you look at this and the pillars, we didn't give a lot of thought that somebody could ever drive a truck through."
The suspect is not known to the station, and his identity has not yet been released. The motive remains unclear.
