Mother claims son's death was fault of D.C. jail
(WJLA) - Carolyn Young came to the D.C. Correctional Treatment Facility seeking her son’s medical records. Marcus Young died here at the age of 29 on May 5, and his mother claims it is the facility’s fault.
"Marcus never should have been out of the medical unit because he had very very serious life-threatening surgeries.after the shooting," she said.
Marcus was shot last October by an off-duty policewoman. Officers say he was acting like he had a gun and was trying to rob her – so she shot him once in the chest.
While the jail was putting out a statement, Young died in the jail infirmary, and his mother showed us this letter from another inmate this week:
"He died a lil' after 1:30 a.m. that morning. The whole unit heard Marcus call the correctional officer around 12:45 to 1 a.m., telling the CO that he was in pain and needed to go to medical."
The letter continues to explain how the guard ignores Marcus' pleas, and that the next morning, when the CO went to his cell, that is when he opened the door and saw that he was dead for more than 7.5 hours. His face was reportedly purple and around his eyes were black.
"I think it's terrible," says Carolyn. "I really think it's terrible that Marcus didn't receive the proper treatment that he needed."
The D.C. Corrections Department reported that Young died in the infirmary, but the inmate’s letter claims that long after Young was dead, the facility used inmates to carry the body to the infirmary where he was then pronounced dead.
