RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Students at Virginia's public community colleges will pay higher tuition and mandatory fees in the upcoming academic year.

The State Board for Community Colleges voted Thursday to increase tuition and fees by $6 per credit hour.

In-state students will pay a total $136 per credit hour, while out-of-state students will pay $330.60.

Board members also increased a tuition differential rate for Northern Virginia Community College by $1.50 per credit hour.

Board chairman Bruce J. Meyer says in a news release that the increase strikes a balance between ensuring that Virginians have affordable access to higher education and having staff and resources to help students succeed.
