Scholte wins GOP nomination to challenge Connolly in Va.'s 11th
SPRINGFIELD, Va. (AP) - Republican Suzanne Scholte has won her party's nomination to challenge Democratic Congressman Gerry Connolly in Northern Virginia's 11th District.
The district's Republicans nominated Scholte by acclimation on the first ballot at a convention Saturday. That's according to James Parmelee, who served as parliamentarian for the convention. It was held at West Springfield High School.
The 11th District is solidly Democratic, and Connolly was re-elected in 2012 with 61 percent of the vote.
Scholte is a longtime human rights advocate and nonprofit director. She worked as a Congressional staffer in the 1980s.
Among her priorities are reforming President Barack Obama's health care overhaul and restoring some defense funding that fell victim to automatic budget cuts.
