MONTGOMERY VILLAGE, Md. (WJLA) – Brendan Donnellan and his co-workers at the Lake Marion Community Center Pool rushed to help after a driver hit her vehicle into a tree along East Village Avenue and wound up in a nearby pond.

"We heard just this loud crash and instantly, it's just one of those sounds that you never want to hear, that you know something bad was happening," said pool manager Brendan Donnellan.

"The lifeguards had run over and tried to get the people out of the car, and did," said witness Karin Baker.

Brendan says his EMT-trained coworker and a few other good Samaritans rushed into the water, where the woman and two boys were still in the vehicle. His coworker sent him back to grab equipment, and when he returned, the woman was being rescued.

"The mom actually couldn't swim, so one of them was helping her get to shore, and when they actually brought her to shore, I helped her out," said Donnellan.

She was eventually taken out on a stretcher and to the hospital, though her sons did not need treatment. She is expected to make a full recovery.

The Montgomery County Fire Department says that the lifeguards and other bystanders who rushed to help performed heroic work.

"It just shows that you never know what's going to happen, and you always need to be prepared," said Donnellan.
