WOODBRIDGE, Va. (WJLA) - Prince William County police are searching for a man who entered a Woodbridge apartment early Wednesday morning and raped a woman at gunpoint -- while her children were in another room.

Officers said they responded to the apartment complex in the 13700 block of Keelingwood Court just after 6 a.m.

For many living in the apartment complex in Woodbridge, the news came as both a surprise and a shock.

The 34-year-old victim tells police that at 4:40 a.m., she awoke to an unknown man inside her bedroom – and he had a gun. She says that the man raped her and then took off, all while her two school-age children were inside the home. Neither child was hurt.

Investigators found no evidence of forced entry, but believe the man entered through the locked front door, and may have had a key. The man is unknown to the woman, but police say it is possible that he had been watching her and specifically targeted her.

This description is from neighbors who report seeing this man lingering in the area three times in the past month. Police were called, but each time, the man was gone by the time officers arrived.

Now, questions and concerns remain.

The man has been described as a black male of unknown age with short black hair, a medium build, and an unshaven face. He was last seen wearing a white t-shirt,  jeans and a dark-colored jacket.
