ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJLA) - Curtis Ryan Morris, a 21-year-old Glen Burnie man, was convicted Wednesday in the death of a 3-month-old baby girl, Kairi Lutz.

According to State's Attorney Colt Leitess, police were called to the Baltimore Washington Medical Center on June 10, 2012 for a report of a deceased baby.

Investigators questioned the baby's mother, Erica Lutz and her boyfriend, Curtis Morris, and learned that the baby had been left with Morris from 2:30 to 9:15 p.m. in a home in Jessup on the day of her death.

Morris told investigators Kairi choked on milk from a bottle shortly after her evening feeding. The infant became unconscious and died a short time later.

However, a medical examiner performed an autopsy the next day and determined the cause of death was head trauma, and ruled the death a homicide. Kairi suffered from bleeding from the brain as well as other traumatic injuries. Medical professionals determined the final brain injuries occurred within six hours of her death.

State's Attorney Leitess said the is disheartened by the death of such a young and innocent baby, and cautions parents to think more carefully about who they allow to care for their children.

“Time and time again we see a baby dying in the hands of someone who is either not the parent, had the infant hoisted upon them to be a caregiver, or who - more often than not - does not have the maturity or patience to handle such a task,” Leitess said.

“Parents need to think twice about who they are leaving their children with, and caregivers need to give themselves a time-out and not lash out," she added.

Morris is charged with second-degree murder, first-degree child abuse and first-degree assault.

Sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 19 in Anne Arundel County Circuit Court.
