(WJLA) - On this day of deep reflection, the memories of D-Day have so many meanings.

The 70th anniversary falls on what is the 14th annual World War II Day at Rocky Run Middle School in Chantilly. And students soak in the stories told by veterans like John Swart.

"As the old saying goes: War is hell," he says.

Swart, a native of Fairfax County, took part in the Normandy Invasion at Utah Beach as a member of the U.S. Army at just 19 years old.

“We had one of our men killed before he got off the boat. That’s when you realize you’re here today, but you may not be here tomorrow."

But the history is also filled with joy and pride – as well as humor. And these students, with no iPads or cell phones in hand, just can’t seem to get enough.
