DAWN OF THE. . . : Dead?, Nah, the ape planet, per the Huffington Post, “Steven Spielberg doesn't have any movies coming out this summer, but he's still well represented at local theaters. Back in May, Gareth Edwards appropriated the Spielberg blockbuster playbook, specifically "Jaws," for "Godzilla." Now in July, it's Matt Reeves' turn to flex his Spielberg muscles. The 48-year-old filmmaker directed "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes," (in theaters Friday) a sequel to 2011's "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," and a film that owes as much to "Apes" lore as it does to "Jurassic Park."

“Set a decade after the events of "Rise," with humanity all but extinct, Reeves' film is focused not on the survivors but the apes and their leader, Caesar (Andy Serkis). The result is almost an oxymoron: a summer action thriller that doubles as an introspective, offbeat character study of a digitally created protagonist, one who learns that the foibles of human nature are not limited to just humans.” http://huff.to/1je5mUV

ROSIE’S VIEW: Apparently she’ll return, per TMZ, “Rosie O'Donnell has made her deal with "The View" ... sources connected with the negotiations tell TMZ. We're told the show will make the announcement shortly.

“. . .The negotiations fired up a few days ago and the deal was almost completed by end of business day Monday. The deal is now complete. Rosie will join Whoopi Goldberg on the show. As we reported, producers are also looking for a Latina and a conservative. Two conservative candidates who are being scoped are Abby Huntsman and Margaret Hoover.” http://bit.ly/1mvX75P

MEANWHILE: The Republican weighs in, per Us Weekly, “Don't cross Elisabeth Hasselbeck. The media personality, 37, sounded off on her longtime enemy Rosie O'Donnell on Wednesday, July 9, reminding her foes that she clearly does not forgive and forget. Hasselbeck, who sparred with O'Donnell on The View back in 2007, called in to Fox News' Fox & Friends morning show while she was on vacation this week to discuss O'Donnell's possible return to The View. "What could ruin a vacation more than to hear news like this?" Hasselbeck said.” http://usm.ag/1ojzsmq

USHER: And MTV, per the Los Angeles Times, “Usher is the latest addition to the list of performers slated for the MTV Video Music Awards. . . MTV was expected to announce the appearance early Wednesday via its social media platforms, The multi-platinum Grammy winner will open the annual award spectacle, which will air live on Aug. 24 from the Forum in Inglewood.” http://lat.ms/1mzjtn0

BRADLEY COOPER: And the delayed Elephant Man, per the New York Times, “The revival of Bernard Pomerance’s “Elephant Man,” with Bradley Cooper in the title role, originally scheduled to begin previews in October, has been delayed a month because of a scheduling conflict, a spokesman for the producers said. . . (It) will now begin previews on Nov. 7 and open on Dec. 7.” http://nyti.ms/1kErrXS

MODERN FAMILY: Or something like that, per The Insider, “Now this is one good-looking potential power couple. Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello are dating, a source confirms to Yahoo. However, the insider cautions that this is all "very new." "They are enjoying their time together, we'll see where it goes," says the source.

“Vergara, 41, first met the True Blood actor, 37, at the White House Correspondents' Dinner in May. At the time, the Modern Family star was engaged to businessman Nick Loeb.” http://yhoo.it/1lUcYa1

JUSTIN BIEBER: Egg on his face, per Rolling Stone, “Justin Bieber has been charged with one count of misdemeanor vandalism after allegedly egging his neighbor's house earlier this year, according to a statement by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. The singer is set to be arraigned today at 1:30 PST at Los Angeles County Superior Court, but is not expected to be present.” http://rol.st/1r8H9j9

CLOONEY NOT HAPPY: And then some, per Variety, “George Clooney has hit out at British tabloid the Daily Mail, alleging the paper has run a false story about his fiancee, the human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin, that has put her life and the lives of her family at risk. The Mail, which has been ramping up its coverage of Hollywood stars and has targeted the U.S. as a growth market for its website, claimed that Alamuddin’s mother, Baria, opposed their forthcoming marriage on religious grounds, and cited unnamed family members as its source.

“In a statement published by USA Today, Clooney wrote: “I want to speak to the irresponsibility of Monday’s Daily Mail report. I seldom respond to tabloids, unless it involves someone else and their safety or well-being. “The Daily Mail has printed a completely fabricated story about my fiancee’s mother opposing our marriage for religious reasons. . .” ’’ http://bit.ly/1kEweJ5

ANGELINA JOLIE: And an old video, per Celebuzz!, “The Angelina Jolie that we know today is not the Angelina Jolie that once was. That is clear. This Goodwill Ambassadoring, world traveling mother of six is not the wild child who won an Oscar for Girl, Interrupted 14 years ago. Which brings us here. National Enquirer has purchased an old video of Jolie, allegedly filmed by her then-drug dealer Franklin Meyer.” http://celeb.bz/1oCbGDy

WEDDING BELLS: Bet there were no bells, per People, “For their romantic July 5 nuptials, Jessica Simpson and Eric Johnson focused on one thing. "It's all about family for us," Simpson tells PEOPLE in this week's cover story, in which the newlyweds talk about their favorite wedding memories for the first time – and share 27 exclusive photos.

“So for the big day, the bride asked her mom, Tina, and her sister, Ashlee, to be her maids of honor. Johnson's father, Stephen, stepped in as best man, while Ashlee's fiancé, Evan Ross, was one of 11 groomsmen. (Simpson had 12 bridesmaids).” http://bit.ly/1mz0by2
