Today's pop-culture roundup includes a steamy sex teaser, the dashing Mr. Yankovic, Jack White on the farm, a pushy Selena Gomez, our mystery music video and much more.
WEIRD AL No. 1: For the first time ever, per the Los Angeles Times, “It's strange but true: "Weird Al" Yankovic, the pop-song parodist who seemed to peak in popularity in the mid 1980s, finally scored his first No. 1 album this week. "Mandatory Fun," Yankovic's 14th studio disc, topped the Billboard 200 chart Wednesday with sales of 104,000 copies in the week that ended July 20, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
“. . .As Billboard's Keith Caulfield points out, "Mandatory Fun" is the first comedy album to hit No. 1 on the tally since 1963, when Allan Sherman's "My Son, the Nut" -- made famous by "Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh! (A Letter from Camp)" -- spent eight weeks there. With parodies of well known tunes by Lorde, Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke, among others, Yankovic's album arrived accompanied by a series of music videos that earned widespread attention on the Internet last week.” http://lat.ms/Uq5tkS

‘THEY CANNOT LET THAT HAPPEN’: Of Rupert Murdoch, per The Wrap, “Jane Fonda thinks a potential acquisition of Time Warner by Rupert Murdoch's 21st Century Fox would be an absolute disaster. “I think it would be a catastrophe,” Fonda told TheWrap during an interview for her “Newsroom” Emmy nomination and upcoming Netflix series. “If that happens I'm going to be so angry at the FCC. They cannot let that happen.” ’’ http://bit.ly/1jXg173
MEANWHILE: Of the other guy, per The Hollywood Reporter, “All the talk that Rupert Murdoch is determined to buy Time Warner might have slightly obscured the feeling among many who know Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes that Bewkes is equally determined to sell.
“That's also the conclusion of others who have merely observed Bewkes' behavior in recent years. "There's no other way to interpret it," says a senior industry executive, referring to Bewkes' seemingly steady march to make Time Warner an attractive target as he pared away AOL, then Time Warner Cable and finally the Time Inc. magazine division in June.” http://bit.ly/1rOBOxX

HOLE: Of mixed messages, per Pitchfork, “Earlier this year, Courtney Love let it slip that she and Hole's mid-90s lineup—Eric Erlandson, Patty Schemel, and Melissa Auf Der Maur—had been rehearsing new material. Then, she backpedaled, saying it may not happen at all.
