FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. (WJLA) – Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) Superintendent Karen Garza has endorsed a proposal to push back school start times for high school students.

The proposal would push times back to at least 40 minutes, according to the Washington Post. Garza also reportedly approves of modifying the plan to include an early middle school start time after 7:30 a.m.

It’s estimated that the proposal will cost the school system $5,580,000 in new buses to accommodate the changes, the Post reports.

The school system held a series of community meetings in May and June to gather feedback from community members about whether to adjust the bell schedule for schools.

FCPS has been considering changing school start times to push them back until after 8 a.m. since April 2012.
