NEW CARROLLTON, Md. (WJLA) – Prince George’s County school officials and residents are currently divided over whether cell phone towers should be built on school grounds.

The county is currently seeking input from parents and residents on a plan for towers on nine sites to be built by Virginia-based communications company Milestone Communications. Potential sites include Benjamin Tasker Middle School in Bowie, Charles Carroll Middle School in New Carrollton and Oxon Hill Middle School in Oxon Hill, according to the Washington Post.

Under the agreement with Milestone, the county would receive $25,000 for each site and the school system could receive an estimated $2.5 million over five years, the Post reports.

Some Prince George’s parents who oppose the towers said they’re worried about their children being exposed to radiation and other health issues and the expanded cell phone coverage from the towers don’t outweigh those concerns.
