Bobby Kirkland was traveling west on Benning Road in an Infiniti car when he failed to navigate a turn, struck a light pole, and then continued along H Street before he ran into the back of a truck, police say.

The driver of the truck was not injured in the crash, but Kirkland was transported to a local hospital where he died.

Police said their preliminary investigation showed the driver of the Infiniti was traveling at a very high rate of speed.

The investigation is ongoing.

All lanes in the 1400 block of Florida Ave. NE and H St. NE between 15th St. and 12th St. NE were closed for the police to investigate during much of the morning.
