Nyerere Mitchell,50 of Clinton, Maryland, pleaded guilty to five counts of first-degree felony fraud Monday in D.C. Superior Court. He faces a maximum of 10 years in prison on each count at sentencing Oct. 10.
Prosecutors said Mitchell drove a silver Range Rover SUV and frequently wore a wig and padded breasts; the fake cab driver would offer rides to people who appeared drunk in areas such as Dupont Circle, Adams Morgan, Foggy Bottom, Chinatown, and other busy neighborhoods in D.C.
Authorities said riders would give Mitchell their ATM cards and PINs so he could drive up to bank machines and withdraw their fares.
Using the scam, he was able to steal more than $200,000 from over 60 people during a three-and-a-half year period, according to prosecutors.
