For years, Lockheed Martin's F-35 Lightning II has been plagued by cost overruns and scheduling delays. Pentagon officials say the program is back on track.

The overall price tag is close to $400 billion, but the cost per plane has yet to be determined. It will be based (among other factors) on how many foreign countries decide to invest in the next generation war fighter.
