Major water main break floods at least 35 homes in Capitol Heights, Md.
CAPITOL HEIGHTS, Md. (WJLA) – More than 30 homes in Capitol Heights, Maryland experienced flooding early Friday due to a water main break.
The 8-inch break occurred around 2:30 a.m. in the 1200 block of Larchmont Avenue. An estimated 35 homes were affected by the water main break with at least one home sustaining significant damage, according to a spokesperson with Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC).
It took WSSC workers almost three hours to find the break and shut off the main valve during which time several homes saw flooding in their front yards and basements.
Water to all homes in the affected area has now been shut off. WSSC crews are currently on scene working to repair the break.
A section of Larchmont Avenue has been closed off until further notice due to a gaping hole in the road. Motorists should avoid the area, if possible.
Officials have not said when they expect repairs to be complete. The cause of the break is also unclear, but is likely due to the age of the system;'s infrastructure.
