BROOKLYN PARK, Md. (WJLA) – Anne Arundel County Police say a co-worker is accused of killing a woman found murdered inside a Popeyes restaurant in Brooklyn Park on Sunday.
Moises Gomez-Castillo, 26, was arrested Monday and charged with first- and second-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault, and theft.
Police said Gomez-Castillo worked at the Popeyes on and off for the last seven years.
A manager found 47-year-old Luzviminda Monreal, of Laurel, suffering from traumatic injuries in the back stock room of the restaurant, which is located on Ritchie Highway. Monreal was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined the cause of Monreal's death was "multiple sharp force injuries" and the manner of death to be "homicide."
Detectives theorize that Monreal caught Gomez-Castillo stealing, prompting him to attack her.
Police said Gomez-Castillo had a well thought-out plan to rob the business. One witness even told police that days earlier, he had shown him the knife and described how he planned on committing the crime.
What's more, police said surveillance cameras caught a man leaving the restaurant after the murder that night - and firefighters at a nearby fire station said the same man seen in that footage showed up at the station hours later, asking for help treating a cut to his hand. The man never said how he cut it.
Monreal had been an employee at the Brooklyn Park Popeyes location for 20 years.
Gomez-Castillo is currently being held at the Anne Arundel County Detention Center without bond pending a bail review.
