Locksmith Alert
category: Alerts!

When you're feeling the most vulnerable, someone is waiting in the wings to take advantage of you!  "Local" locksmiths are ready to do just that. Check out our story by clicking here.

It was very difficult getting answers from 24 Hour Locksmith. Every time I started asking questions about who they were or where they were based they would hang up.  They're not in our area that's for sure. They told me the company is run out of Brooklyn by a guy named "Moshe" who's already ever comes in the office. I left a message for him but he never called back. I'm not surprised given the reception we got from the people who are working for him.

Illinois and Missouri have taken action against similar operations. In fact a recent legal filing in Missouri names a company called Dependable Locksmiths that does business under several variations of the name 24 Hour Locksmith which is the company we we investigated. I

What we uncovered is difficult for consumers to detect but here are some warning signs

1. When you call a locksmith you think is local and they won't give you their local address.

2. If they tell you they are a mobile service that could be an indication it's one of the questionable locksmith companies that have been investigated.

3. If they give you a price over the phone then try to charge more at the door.

4. They want to drill before even trying to pick the lock.

5. A lockout on your house or car should cost around $100.00. Drilling a locks should be the same amount. Drilling should only be done on a lock that can't be picked.

Associated Locksmiths of America is trying to stop it and has more information on their website and links to local state law enforcement agencies to file complaints.

This illegitimate locksmith thing is getting out of hand nationwide. I would estimate 70% of the ads in the phone books are deceptive. This women mentioned USA Locksmiths as being local. Not so, they are a dispatch service. Legitimate and illegitimate locksmiths sign up for large exposure. They farm the work out. They get 60%, you get 40% so the bill gets pumped up as high as they think they can get away with. I was approached by a company like this years ago. Of course I refused, it's called Integrity. My suggestion for the public would be to seek out a Licensed locksmith before you end up needing one. Same thing for a plumber, electrician or an alarm installer. Sooner or later you will no doubt need their services. This is one reason why my phone is not ringing. The scum bags are getting all the work. I closed my shop three years ago because of lack of business and store traffic. A big box home center moved into town just two miles away. Now I am only mobile. You can't make a living just installing home center locks and making keys. Check out my website and learn more about me. www.ablelocksmith.com Bob Maison

If a locksmith shows up with no uniform and no marked vehicle, that is a glaring sign. Also if they cannot provide a business card. If they try to do something to your lock other than pick or drill it - stop them! I say that because someone brought us a knob that a "locksmith" literally sawed in half. If you feel you have been scammed, you can report them to Associated Locksmiths of America and the Better Business Bureau. In Virginia, you can complain to the Department of Criminal Justice Services. Ask a locksmith for a DCJS Number. If they don't have a license number or ID card, decline!

AN EMAIL FROM CELIA
I saw your alert about locksmiths just a few moments ago and that very same person came to my house on April 30, as I had lock myself out and had to go on to work with the dog locked inside. I found USA Locksmiths in the yellow pages as they were very close to my house. The very same fellow showed up. He first looked at the lock and said it was to old a lock to pick so he started to drill out the lock, which destroyed the lock of course, then he proceeded to give me prices on the high security door lock and the high security dead bolt. The total bill came to Seven hundred Fifty-seven. He refused a credit card and I wrote the check to the person that you showed on the TV. Just wanted to let you know. This cost me two week salary. WOW. Thanks for the alert. In emergency we don't always shop around for help. Guess the panic kicks in. Thanks for listening. Celia
