Metro Bus Accidents

Over the last year we've conducted at least 8 investigations into Metro Bus accidents. It all started when 3 pedestrians were struck down and killed within days of each other. We caught buses speeding, running red lights and going through stop signs.

That prompted us to dig further. It took time but we were able to get accident statistics over a 12 month period. After analyzing the data we had some perspective. Check out the story.   According to Metro the accident rate is one fifth that of New York but still Metro is trying to reduce it by another 50 percent.

What I want to say here, is that the folks in Metro's Public relations department have been much more cooperative and have not been dismissive as they appeared to be after our first investigation. Metro has hired a new bus operations manager who has been forthright with us and Metro's PR folks have behaved professionally.

The good news. Things seem to be getting better and I should point out, it's not always the driver's fault. We observed some very careless pedestrians during our investigations. In fact about half of the time, the accidents are the result of pedestrian behaviour. That wasn't the case on Valentines Day with 2 Federal workers, they didn't  have a chance.

As a pedestrian you have the right of way, but remember you can be right but you can be "dead right".   In this area you always cross the street at your own peril. Never assume anyone is following or will follow the rules of the road.

Have a good weekend.
