At the last debate in Ohio, Hillary Clinton wondered aloud why as she put it, “In the last several debates, I seem to get the first question all the time. If anybody saw Saturday night live,”she said, “you know, maybe we should ask Barack if he’s comfortable and needs another pillow.”

Her husband, former President Bill Clinton, campaigning in Texas this week, spoke of the “…obvious bias of the pundits dancing on Hillary’s grave. It’s the only dance they know.”

I ask the Inside Washington panel this week if the press is being unfair to Senator Clinton and they seemed to think, yes, somewhat, and yes, the press is giving Obama a break, but stand by, they say, that will change.

And on the issue of Iraq over which Obama and McCain had a lively back and forth this week:

Obama: “If Al Qaeda is forming a base in Iraq…”

McCain: “I have some news. Al Qaeda is in Iraq, It’s called Al Qaeda in Iraq.”

Obama; “I have some news for John McCain and that is there was no such thing as Al Qaeda in Iraq until George Bush and John McCain decided to invade.”

If Obama is the nominee, that is a preview of the debate that this country will hear over the next several months.

The Washington Post’s Colbert King says it’s a good and necessary debate. Newsweek’s Evan Thomas says it’s a misleading debate because the next president will be held hostage by events on the ground in Iraq regardless of whether he or she would like to bring the troops home within a few months.

And speaking of Iraq, Army Chief of Staff General George Casey testified before Congress this week that the surge in Iraq is taking its toll on the Army. He said the cumulative effect of the last six-plus years at war have left the Army, “…out of balance, consumed by the current fight and unable to do the things we know we need to do to properly sustain our all-volunteer force and restore our flexibility for an uncertain future.”

Charles Krauthammer says on Inside Washington, "What do you want to have, a happy standing Army or an Army that wins the war in Iraq?"

Our other panelists seem to think that the issue is more complex than that.

"We are going to make running for office so expensive that only the people we choose can afford to run. Of course there will be other candidates, but they are well paid and in the show to make the average person think that a real election is going on. We are also going to eliminate the write-in ballot to keep someone like Ross Perot from coming in the back door. This way, our people will not have to rely on the voter to win election to office. Besides, some of the stuff we are going to have to do to get the things our way, is going to make a whole lot of people rip roaring mad!"

This beauty contest is so blatent at avoiding the issues, ALL of them have to be together on avoiding the issues. FOR INSTANCE: ALL of the "candidates" talk about tax cuts for this and that--BUT NOT ONE OF THEM WILL TALK ABOUT MAKING THE TAX CODE HONEST, FAIR AND EQUAL.
