(Fielding) Chance of a Lifetime
category: High School

You talk about a thrill for some local high school kids...

Yesterday, at Nationals Park, Whitman and Bethesda-Chevy Chase, longtime arch-rivals, got to play a baseball game - right there on the perfectly green grass of Nats Park.  They were some kind of psyched.  The players (and coaches) were ooh-ing and ahh-ing about the place, taking pictures, the whole deal.

They even got to warm-up in the bullpen.  We interviewed a few players pregame - just so they could get the whole big league feel.

Needless to say, they were just a bit more enthused about the ABC7 mic in their faces than their major league counterparts.

Whitman was the home team - so they got to use the Nats dugout.  One of the Whitman kids proudly declared that he was using Wily Mo Pena's batting helmet cubicle.

I'd say the kid was roughly the size of Wily Mo's right forearm.  Attendance was reserved for friends and family so there were only about 200 people there (so it actually looked like a real Nats game!)  The final score was 5-1 Whitman, but I'm betting the excitement of the day softened the blow for B-CC.

Special thanks to Whitman mom Lora Bevirt for clueing us in on the game and for the pictures.
