The death of Tim Russert hit us all like a ton of bricks. Tim was more than a superb journalist, he was an avid sports fan. Timmy was a season ticket holder for both the Wizards and the Nationals. It seemed that everytime I broadcast a Boston College basketball game,Tim was in the first row with his son Luke. Tim and I traveled back to Washington together several times and while I wanted to talk about politics, he wanted to talk sports. We've lost a great one! Our thoughts and prayers are certainly with his family.
Congratulations to Alex Ovechkin, Bruce Boudreau and the entire Capitals organization! Alex the Great won the Lester B. Pearson Award, given to the most outstanding player as voted by his peers. He also won the Hart Terophy as the leagues MVP. Boudreau,53, is perhaps the best story in sports over the last six months. Way to go. Great stuff!
I had breakfast with Jim Zorn this morning at Redskins Park and loved every second of our visit. He is like a kid at Christmas. He loves the job, he loves his team, he loves the game and he is a teacher. It would be nice to see a guy like that succeed. By the way, he is going to call all of the plays!
I know that the Nationals are not the Yankees, but sometimes in that clubhouse a couple of players treat the media like they (the players) belong to the most successful organization in baseball. Recently, one of my producers walked through the clubhouse with a cameraman, and Dmitri Young told him to "get the s_ _ _ out of here." I must have missed the Hall of Fame bust over Dmitri's locker. I'll tell you this, If my club was 26-42 and a whopping 14 games back in the standings having lost 10 of the last 12 ball games, I would talk with the media every chance I got to let them know I care and want to get better! Hey Nats, PLAY BETTER or BE NICER, preferably both!
This is certainly one of my favorite weekends of the year. The U.S.Open is always enjoyable to watch. Torrey Pines is spectacular, the conditions are tough and the golfers are sensational!
