So here we go again. The Capitals and the Penguins in the playoffs. It's amazing how time flies. I remember being out in Piney Orchard the day after Pittsburgh beat the Caps in the playoffs the last time. You know, the game when Sergei Gonchar turned over the puck at the blue line (that makes me sound like Don Cherry) and Martin Straka took it in and beat Olie to clinch the series. That seems like a couple of years ago, right? Try again. Try eight years ago. 2001. I remember how 'stand-up' Gonchar was that day, answering question after question, this after being 'the goat' (I hate that term, that and 'choking'.) Now Gonchar is
on the Penguins but he is far from the top stroyline. That would be Ovechkin-Crosby. Man, what a matchup. I asked Ovie about it yesterday and he gave me the standard "I don't wat to talk about Crosby" line. But he says it with a (blank)-eating grin on his face, as if he's relishing the opportunity. I told Boudreau about Ovie's (blank)-eating grin and he responded: "Alex has a (blank)-eating grin all the time!" Maybe, but my bet is Alex - and Boudreau for that matter - are loving the hype - the more the merrier - and can't wait to get a shot at Sid the Kid. As everybody knows, the Penguins have owned the Caps in the playoffs. One fan I interviewed at Kettler yesterday even conceded she wishes it wasn't the Penguins; she knows how this (almost) always ends. But those Caps teams didn't have Ovie, and they didn't have the Coach who seems to push just the right button (i.e. Varlamov) at just the right time. This thing ought to be something.
