This weekend was a disastrous series for the Nationals. They were swept by the first place Marlins. In nine games this season, the Nats have now lost eight of them to the Fish. This would be understandable if we're talking about the Phillies, who have three of the best players in the game. But the Marlins might have a lower payroll than the Nats, and yet they're beating them every way imaginable.
Saturday night, it was an 11-0 blowout. On Mother's Day, the Nats squander a 4-1 lead and lose 5-4. If the Lerner family is calm and patient, I applaud them. But I wouldn't blame them, if they were extremely upset with their team's performance. Christian Guzman is the only everyday player, playing to his capability. By building from within, the Nats have few options to right the ship. But the attendance is really suffering. An announced crowd of less than 26,000 were at the game.. That's not good for a Sunday in May.
With this being said, the Nats might have to consider a responsible free-agent plan in the off-season. The new ballpark has already lost it's luster because the product is playing so poorly. For this to happen so soon is almost unheard of. But this is the reality. Makes you wonder why the Marlins are so good and the Nats are so bad, if both teams have equal talent. As Ricky Ricardo would say: -- The Nats have "some splaing to do".
