The Wizards held their exit interviews today with each player. Surprisingly, Antwan Jamison was not there.. Antwan is an unrestricted free-agent. He probably wants to avoid the questions about his future and get a gage of how management is thinking.
Meanwhile, we all know Gilbert Arenas can opt out of his contract. Gilbert did have his exit interview today. Gil avoided the media afterwords, but I interviewed him before his meeting with Eddie Jordan. Gilbert reaffirmed that he will opt out of his contract. Before he got hurt, Gil was hoping to get a maximum contract of six years, worth over 100 million dollars. Gil told me if the knee gets back to normal, he will ask for the max contract. But if the knee doesn't respond, he won't demand top dollar. Arenas also said that he is willing to take less money if it will ensure that Antwan will be back with the team. His gut feeling tells him that he will be back. Mr Pollin has repeatedly told Gilbert, he wants him back.
Five days ago, Gil said, that Mr. Pollin told Antwan, he wants both of them back. Eddie Jordan and the rest of the Wizards also want Gil to return. So all indications are that the Big Three will stay in tact, especially if that's what Mr. Pollin wants.. But all the right things were said when Larry Hughes was a free-agent and Hughes went on to sign with Cleveland, so anything can happen. Gilbert does not have an agent and he won't hire one unless things get murky in the free-agent market.
Here's my take on Gil: With his knee injury, there is a risk in signing him.. But the Big Three and Eddie Jordan have brought success and stability to a franchise that struggled to find direction. I think Gil and Antwan deserve the right to finish, what they started.
With that said, the Wizards should do what it takes to sign them both.. You can see my interview with Gilbert during ABC-7 Sports at 6:30 and 11 o'clock tonight.
