Can an EF-2 tornado in northern Illinois derail this train? You betcha!
In our continuing examination of Man v. Weather (last episode: avalanche beats out Russian soldiers in the clinch), enjoy this video of a locomotive wrestling with a tornado. The video comes from a backward-facing cam in the cab of the train while it was chugging through northern Illinois in Jan. 2008. When it passed through the town of Lawrence the twister left damage IDing it as only an EF-2 with 110 m.p.h. winds, yet it still managed to whip 12 freight cars off the track. You can see pictures of the destruction it left behind at the National Weather Service's Chicago website. It was one of only two tornadoes to strike north central or northeast Illinois in January since 1950, according to the NWS.
