Update (5:38pm) - The Tsunami Warning was cancelled for the Pacific with waves generated only around 3.5 feet near the Epicenter..
A very strong and powerful 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck off the Kermadec Islands northeast of New Zealand today. This earthquake has the potential to cause a tsunami, which is why a Tsunami Warning is posted for the Kermadec Islands, Tonga and New Zealand. There is no watch or warning in effect for the United States or even Hawaii, though some very slight rises in sea level or fast and unusual currents.
