Mid-Atlantic fall foliage from above (PHOTOS)
The mix of colors from the turning leaves (red, orange, & bark) opposite the still active green grass on lawns and fields made for a beautiful stark image from the sky!
I've spent quite a bit of time matching my pictures with maps of the terrain and I think I've got at least a couple of the locations correct. Please update me with an e-mail with your thoughts if I've got some wrong (which is very likely)!
With a south breeze that Sunday, our jet was approaching Dulles from the northwest so that we could land into the wind. I distinctly remember crossing rivers several times before landing, therefore I'm pretty sure we see in the photographs below the northern end of the Shenandoah Valley while flying over West Virginia, into Frederick County in Virginia, briefly crossing over to Maryland, then back into Virginia landing at Dulles.
I'm having trouble picking out this first one. I think it's possibly a ridge/mountain while still somewhere in West Virginia.

If my geography is correct, then this is a look south into Virginia (specifically Frederick County). In the distance, you can see Front Royal, VA on the east side of the Shenandoah River.

I believe this is right along Route 7 just west of Paris Mountain with Front Royal again barely discernable in the distance.

Route 7 right near Berryville just before crossing the Blue Ridge?

I think that's Blue Ridge Mountain Road.

And finally what I think is the best pic: this appears to me the Route 7/Route 734, but I could be (and probably am) just off by a bit!
