Imagine waking up to the power being out and a faint orange glow outside your windows.
A fire started Thursday night in Reno, Nev., damaging 20 homes and causing numerous injuries. Here is a YouTube video of someone waking up to the blaze. Thanks to Twitter user @WeatherNationWX for the find.
A High Wind Warning has made battling the fires slow going as burning embers have been able to travel up to a mile in the air before setting fire to new areas. Winds have been gusting in some areas to 60 mph and relative humidities have been low which only increases the fire danger.
Here is the 12z weather balloon sounding for Reno, NV which shows 50kt winds right off the surface. When that encounters the mountains surrounding the city it can easily be mixed down, particularly with the cold front that is moving through the region today. It is currently in the 50s there and temperatures will fall through the 30s tonight. Conditions still look poor to fight this fire though with low humidity values still in the forecast along with gusty winds behind the front.
