A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH is in effect until 9pm for areas along and west of the Blue Ridge. There is a chance the watch will be extended eastward towards to metro area.

A strong cold front approaching the region has fired up a number of heavy thunderstorms across northern MD and WV. Right now, it appears the threat of severe weather will remain north and west of the metro area. However, heavy thunderstorms are developing east of the watch area and need to be closely monitored for its lightning, gusty winds and heavy downpours. Weather conditions will be monitored closely for the rest of the afternoon and evening until the cold front clears to area and the threat subsides.

Gusty winds have pushed temperature into the 70s in areas that have not be rain-cooled. Later tonight temperatures will fall into the mid 40s to lower 50s. Partly cloudy and pleasant weather will return for tomorrow and most of Friday. By Friday evening, however, a weather disturbance could bring more showers to the region. Over the weekend, drier air will return with partly cloudy skies and daytime high temperatures will be several degrees above average.
