That slow moving cold front is still moving slowly and will take the rest of the day and night to pass through and to the east of our area. A few showers are possible for the rest of the afternoon and early evening. As the front gets closer later tonight, the chances of showers and isolated thunderstorms will increase. There is an increasing area of rain with embedded thunderstorms over southwestern Virginia and central North Carolina. This activity is moving in our general direction just ahead of the cold front. This is our rationale for increasing the likelihood of rain later tonight.
The front will be near the Atlantic coast before sunrise and as high pressure quickly builds back into the area, gusty northwest winds will develop and deliver drier air. That will translate into a mostly sunny day with highs around 70 degrees. Sunny skies will be widespread on Friday with highs in the middle 70s. More sunshine and warmer temperatures are forecast for Saturday. On Sunday, Mother’s Day, sunshine should be prevalent into the afternoon hours BUT…with approach of another cold front, there will be a chance of a late afternoon shower or thunderstorm.
