This last day of September will close out an anomalous month. It is the only one this year that has been wetter than normal! The 4.29 inches tally at Reagan National is a full 0.70 inches above average. In what has been an exceptionally dry year with a rainfall deficit of almost 7 inches, this is a statistic to celebrate!
A few showers fell this morning to the northwest and over southern Maryland as a low pressure center continues to spin near the Great Lakes. With the possibility of a few more showers later today, we could even add to September's watery bounty! For the most part, however, look for today to be a pleasant mix of sun and clouds with light breezes from the west. Highs today should be near the seasonal norm of 73. There is a slight risk of showers in the overnight hours and then again on Monday afternoon. But the major threat of rain comes late Monday into Tuesday as a juicy air mass from the Gulf threatens to bring heavy rain and thunderstorms Tuesday. Thereafter, Wednesday and Thursday should feature a return to sunny skies and milder air - yes, it will be warmer and stickier on Tuesday with a high near 80 - before yet more showers could arrive for week's end. Enjoy your Sunday.
