Cooler air will filter in tonight behind the cold front.

Lows: 30 to 40 | Wind: W 4-8 m.p.h.

Wednesday: Partly Cloudy and Mild

Highs: Mid 50s | Wind: WNW 10 m.p.h.

Thursday: Mostly Cloudy, PM Rain Likely

Highs: Low to Mid 50s | Precipitation: 70%

After passage of this morning’s cold front, as high pressure started surging into the area, winds became rather gusty and temperatures actually climbed close to 60 degrees. It is not uncommon for the colder air to lag behind the surface front. And that was the case today. As we head through the evening and nighttime hours, the winds will diminish and temperatures will fall.

By morning, under mostly clear skies, temperatures will fall near or below freezing in outlying areas but remain closer to 40 degrees downtown. We are forecasting lots of sunshine tomorrow with temperatures still above average. But on Thursday, as the high pressure center moves out, the next storm system and cold front will approach. The result will be rapidly increasing cloudiness on Thursday with rain developing by the afternoon. The rain could be moderate at times through Thursday night.

By Friday, a strong cold front will cross our area and it will most definitely begin to feel like late December. Look for strong, gusty winds on Friday with partly sunny skies. A few flurries will be possible, especially north and west of Washington. Dry and seasonably cold weather is forecast for the weekend.
