A stretch of quiet weather for the beginning of 2013. High pressure will be the dominant atmospheric feature for the next several days. This will keep skies clear to partly cloudy with temperatures around or slightly below average. A weak cold front will cross the region late Thursday but will have little effect on the overall pattern. Looking beyond the next 6 to 7 days, there are interesting signs of a noticeable warm-up across the area. Ordinarily we would refer to this kind of warming pattern as the January Thaw. But given the rather moderate temperatures we have enjoyed, the January Thaw doesn’t quite fit. But feel free to call it that if you wish. The most frequently asked question I have received in the last week is whether I think we will get bitterly cold later this month and a lot of snow. Too soon to tell, but at the moment guidance is not showing that…in fact, it is showing quite the opposite. We will keep you informed and I will let you know when/if any signs surface indicating a return to winter conditions.
